CAREFULLY CRAFTED CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES AND ACTIVITIES

Each non fiction close reading comprehension passage falls within the Lexile level of 450-790, which is the standard expectation for 2nd-3rd grade. The Lexile level is marked at the top of each passage. The informational text types range between STEM topics, science, history, and opinion pieces. The formats include website simulations, magazine articles, and texts with multiple diagrams. In terms of interest level, EVERY nonfiction passage is written with a 2nd grader in mind.

WHAT STANDARDS ARE THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES ALIGNED TO?

These non fiction reading comprehension activities are most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 2nd grade classroom. There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version where the passages and activities make references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both sets of passages and activities, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.

WHAT CAN THESE NONFICTION CLOSE READING PASSAGES BE USED FOR?

These nonfiction close reading passages and activities are perfect for teaching reading comprehension skills, reading assessments, guided reading groups, or reading comprehension homework. Your students must refer to the text and provide textual evidence of their understanding and comprehension of the reading passages.

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ " I appreciate being able to pull a standard and have a few options for independent or small group reading comprehension practice. Each reading passage connects to the standard, and there are there other spiral tasks as well. Thank you!” – Lisa K.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ " I love all of these standards-based passages. Most passages are engaging for students and offer great, thorough questions about each standard and offer review questions from other standards. I can't say enough good things about these packs!” – Emily P.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ " I am beyond pleased with this reading comprehension resource. I use it as an enrichment activity for my high readers as a "book club" of sorts and it is great! I absolutely love how each of the reading passages and activities are strategically aligned to a standard. I simply choose the standard that the students need more practice with and BAM!! All set and ready to go.” – Lindsey E.

NOTE:

The Common Core standards consider 2nd and 3rd grade level texts within the same Lexile level band of 450-790. That means I use many (about 85%) of the same texts in both the 2nd and 3rd grade reading passages. I only modify the reading passages slightly for text complexity and to better match the specific grade level standards. However, you will see that the questions and activities on each of these grade level products are completely different and aligned to that grade level’s standards. If a 2nd grade teacher is looking for something to differentiate for higher level readers, I suggest my 4th Grade Close Reading packs.
