What educators are saying

My class progressed so much with this resource! Being able to introduce a concept and have them put it into action is the best and this is so amazing!
This has been a great resource for my reading lessons especially writing to respond. I also used these for state testing prep. It helps students to highlight evidence and write a response that completely answers the question.

CAREFULLY CRAFTED CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES AND ACTIVITIES

Each close reading comprehension passage falls within the Lexile level of 770-980, which is the standard expectation for 4th-5th grade. There are a variety of literature types including narratives, biographies, and letters. The informational text passages range between STEM topics, science, history, and opinion pieces. The formats include stories told from multiple points of view, magazine articles, and texts with multiple diagrams. In terms of interest level, EVERY reading passage is written with a 4th grader in mind.

WHAT STANDARDS ARE THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES ALIGNED TO?

This product is most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 4th grade classroom. There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version where the passages and activities make references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both sets of passages and activities, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.

WHAT CAN THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES BE USED FOR?

These close reading comprehension passages and activities are perfect for teaching reading comprehension skills, reading assessments, guided reading groups, or reading comprehension homework. Your students must refer to the text and provide textual evidence of their understanding and comprehension of the passages.

    TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This is the fourth grade-level Close Reading bundle I've purchased from Alyssha Swanson: Teaching and Tapas. I've also purchased her add-on extension packs to go along with each of the grade levels. All are fantastic! My students and I use this resource for classwork and homework. I appreciate that the passages are aligned with the CCSS and they're referenced as "learning targets". We love the variety of engaging topics and that the passage headers include the Lexile Level and word count. This helps all of us, including their parents, understand what reading levels they are able to successfully read and comprehend. It also helps us recognize reading growth throughout the school year. Plus, the Respond and Review questions give students opportunities to practice writing constructed responses. The use of specific crayon colors for some of the questions help to quickly identify students who need additional help. Thank you for providing useful resources for us!” – Gracelyn M.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I used this when I was teaching third grade. When I moved to fourth I knew I needed this. It was the first thing I bought. I like these for so many reasons. It is great to cover all standards and prep students for state tests. It is rigours but is an amazing resource.” – Bailey A.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I love this resource!! I have the 5th grade bundle from when I taught 5th and knew I had to get it for 4th when I made the switch. I love that there are several passages aligned to each standard and the questions that accompany each passage are great! I use these passages all the time in whole group instruction, guided reading, and even for assessments!” – Lauren K.

    NOTE:

The Common Core standards consider 4th and 5th grade level texts within the same Lexile level band of L770-980. That means I use many (about 70%) of the same passages in both the 4th and 5th grade products. I only modify the passages slightly for text complexity and to better match the specific grade level standards. However, you will see that the questions and activities for each of these grade level products are completely different and aligned to that grade level’s standards. If a 5th grade teacher is considering the 4th grade pack for something to differentiate for lower level readers, I suggest my 3rd grade pack - 3rd Grade Close Reading Passages and Activities - BUNDLE
