4th Grade Math Word Problem of the Day | August Digital Math Problem Solving

Math problem solving is one of the most challenging skills we teach in fourth grade. Research shows the best way to build these skills is through short, purposeful daily practice with both single- and multi-step word problems. These August-themed story problems are fully digital and can be shared with students via Google Slides or in Google Classroom.

Designed to take less than 15 minutes per day - including giving students time to solve, discuss, and review - each month's problems include single-step, multi-step and word problems with extra information. This helps build students' capacity for critical thinking and mathematical problem-solving skills.

The problems increase in complexity across the months. This is purposefully done to help prepare students for the types of problems they may see on state tests and in 5th grade.

• 5 weeks of August-themed word problems (25 problems on Google Slides)

• 2 versions of paper-based student response sheets & workspace

• Answer keys

• Access to step-by-step directions for assigning these in Google Classroom

Word Problem Themes:

Each week includes a fun fact and the word problems are themed to align with monthly holidays, special events, and kid-friendly topics. This month's topics are:

✔ Week 2: Birthdays

✔ Week 3: Peaches

✔ Week 4: Dogs

✔ Week 5: Watermelon

• Digital classrooms or for home learning

• Interactive whiteboard or projector during whole or small group math instruction

• Projected as a daily problem-solving warm-up

• Enrichment or challenge problems for early finishers
