Love this resource! I used it during my math extended day program and it really helped the students organize their thinking and work through the problems!
I have been using these with my intervention group. I like how it helps my students to break down the problems.

Word Problem Practice

This resource includes 30 multi-step word problems that require the students to solve problems with more than one operation. This pack includes whole numbers only and all four operations. I created this resource to use as an intervention for my students struggling with interpreting and solving word problems.

This set aligns with Common Core Standards 4.OA.3, 4.NBT.5, and 4.NBT.6.

On each page, the students are presented with a word problem. The students must:

  • Retell the word problem in their own words.
  • Explain the steps they will take to solve the problem.
  • Solve the problem.
  • Prove their answer makes sense.
  • Prove their answer is correct with a written explanation and/or model.

The resource includes an answer key.

I have include two different blank templates. One with a space for you to write in or glue a word problem, and the other as just a blank template that can work with any word problem.

I have also included the word problems in a copy friendly version with multiple word problems on a page. You could give the students the word problem and the blank template. The template could be laminated and written on with dry erase markers.

Word Problem Sorts

This resource includes 12 word problems that are a mix of one-step and multi-step problems. Your students will be required to read each problem and sort it after determining which type of problem each one is.

On each page, the students are presented with four word problems. The students must:

  • Cut out each word problem.
  • Sort each word problem into the correct side based on whether it is a one-step or multi-step problem.
  • Glue each word problem to the page.

Use the word problem sorts to provide grade level word problem practice in a less threatening format. Students will read rigorous word problems with the main focus of understanding the context of the word problem and determining the operation that would be used. They will then sort the word problems accordingly. The activity can be extended by having students solve the problems or solve a few of them.

Digital Word Problem Practice and Digital Word Problem Sorts

Digital versions of both the word problems and the sorts are designed for use in Google Slides.

To assign only a few of the slides at a time, make a copy of your master. Rename the copy. Delete the slides you don't want to assign. Then assign your new file to your students.

For digital access and for more information on assigning Google Slides activities, see pages 7-9 of the PDF.

Please see the video preview to see how the digital versions work.

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
