Description

Reading choice boards are an excellent way to offer choice to your students while still having them practice grade level reading skills. These reading choice boards will help you integrate the 5th grade informational reading standards into your students daily reading.

This informational reading choice board resource contains 13 choice boards:

  • 10 mini choice boards for each 5th grade common core informational standard
  • 3 choice boards written by domain with the standards grouped --> This is ideal for a nice review after all of the standards in that domain have been introduced and taught.

Example Tasks:

  • Choose a section from the text. Create 2 questions from the information in that section. Answer them with details from the text.
  • Read an informational book about an animal. What is the main idea that you took away about that animal? Explain your reasoning.
  • Read a historical text with at least two events. Explain how the events are similar and how they are different.
  • Find a phrase that confused you at first or that might be confusing to others. Restate the phrase in your own words.
  • Write two informational texts about how to clean your room using a description structure for one and a chronological structure for the other. Which is more effective, in your opinion?
  • Read an informational text about an animal. How does the author view the animal? What words helped you make your decision?
  • Read an informational text with an index. Evaluate the effectiveness of the index at finding information about the main topic of the text.
  • Read a speech provided online, in your social studies textbook, or provided by your teacher. What is the author’s main point?
  • Choose two biographies of the same person. Compare and contrast the information presented by both texts.

Each standards-based choice board contains 8 tasks for the students to complete with their independent reading book or their textbooks. Some of the choices require specific types of informational text for the students to read. This will help broaden a student’s variety of reading.

The reading choice boards could be used for homework, independent work, or reading centers. These would be perfect for a reader’s response center, a write about reading center, or just Reader’s Workshop.

Other Important Notes:

  • Available in two formats: with and without a colored background.
  • Answer key not included due to the nature of the resource.
  • Texts not included.

These would be perfect for GATE enrichment.
