Description

Data collection is very important. The purpose of collecting data is to find causes to current issues, track progress of a current behavior(s), or to track progress of a specific skill. Collecting data allows the IEP team to make data-driven decisions regarding the student’s performance as opposed to decisions simply based on subjective information. Having information based from your data is greatly beneficial for the IEP team because they can adjust the levels of assistance the student needs and the level of reinforcement that is being delivered to the student. Keeping appropriate data on a skill or a behavior is not always as easy as it seems and it is important to keep in mind that data collection should not be so overwhelming that it interferes with your teaching. Creating data sheets that work with you rather than against you is very important. Attached is an ABC data sheet that I created for tracking behaviors. It is very easy to use, and it allows you to check off the information rather than writing paragraphs and paragraphs of information. The other thing I like about this data sheet, is that it can be tailored to meet your student’s needs. Because it is a WORD document, you can make changes to the data sheet that identifies the most common behaviors that you are taking data on.
