Description

Teaching students sign language related to the world around them is an important part of language development.  What better place to start than basic vocabulary and command words.  Incorporate translanguaging strategies into your learning environment with these 25 cards that have Spanish, English and the visual image of the ASL motions.

These colorful ASL Vocabulary Cards display a variety of classroom commands and basic communication. Perfect for young students new to a school setting or ESL / ELL students learning a new language. These school vocabulary cards are also perfect for special education students.  These vocabulary cards can be used in a variety of ways from flashcards to games to clarifying directions. Sign Language is a great tool for teaching your child basic requests and will improve language development. Using sign language with your baby starting at 6 to 8 months will help their communication and reduce outbursts. Also, sign language is an essential tool when a child is learning two languages at the same time.

When signs are paired with the verbally spoken word-- in both languages-- this improves acquisition of the new word. Sign language will help decrease any delays or confusion caused by dual languages.

1) Print up the images on card stock; you can make them double-sided and laminate them.

2) Start by picking two to three signs that your child is interested or that serves a need in your home or classroom. Focus on the functions that are important for your language needs and communication.

3) Say the word as you do the sign. The cards are to remind you of the sign and the corresponding word in either English or Spanish. You can use the cards as a teaching tool for older children in the classroom also.
