What educators are saying

My students loved this resources. It was a great supplemental to adding fractions. I would definitely recommend.
This was a perfect tool to use during my classtime and intervention block to reinforce the skills of fractions with my students.

Description

The product contains six worksheets for adding fractions with unlike denominators.

Two worksheets allow students to practice using the area model for adding fractions. Students are given an addition problem, a fraction bar diagram, and space to rewrite the problem with a common denominator. The worksheets give an example with the steps for solving using this strategy. The first worksheet provides more guidance in the first three problems and then slowly provides students more opportunity to use the strategy independently.

The second set of two worksheets allows students to practice finding a common denominator using a list of multiples. Again, each worksheet provides students with an example with steps for solving using the strategy. It also provides space for students to list the multiples and rewrite the fraction with the new denominator.

Also included is a front-to-back worksheet with five word problems involving adding fractions. The students must determine a common denominator before adding. Students are given space to write the equation and answer.

Finally, a color-by-fraction activity is included in this product! Engage students with a fun coloring activity involving adding fractions. Students must first solve six addition problems using any strategy to determine the common denominator. They then can check their work by using the key to color in the picture!

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
