What educators are saying

Thank you for this bundle, it really helped when it was time to break out the algebra tiles for my daily algebra 1 class. I cant wait to use it more next year. Thank you!
What an amazing resource. I have taught solving equations with algebra tiles and recently moved grades. Highly highly recommend

Description

This unit of lessons will guide students in learning how to use algebra tiles to multiply, factor, and complete the square. Then, they will use that understanding to transition to the area model (box method) and standard algorithms.

The 12 included lessons are easy to implement, even if you have never taught with algebra tiles. Each lesson has a PowerPoint and Google Slides version that leads students in working with algebra tiles, box methods, and standard algorithms. Each lesson also has a follow-up worksheet (PDF) for students to practice what they are learning.

12 Lessons:

  1. Intro to Algebra Tiles
  2. Multiplying with Algebra Tiles
  3. Multiplying Binomials
  4. Multiplying with the Standard Algorithm
  5. Factoring with Algebra Tiles
  6. Factoring with Algebra Tiles Using Zero Pairs
  7. Factoring without Algebra Tiles with GCFs or a=1
  8. Factoring without Algebra Tiles
  9. Factoring by Grouping
  10. Solving Quadratics by Factoring
  11. Completing the Square with Algebra Tiles
  12. Completing the Square without Algebra Tiles

For each of the 12 lessons, you will receive:

  • Presentations in PowerPoint and Google Slides format to guide the lessons
  • Optional Student PowerPoint / Google Slides to follow along with movable algebra tiles and blanks to fill in responses
  • Follow up practice worksheets with answer keys

You will also receive:

  • 3 quizzes with answer keys
  • Printable algebra tiles

Some of the lessons work best when students can manipulate their own algebra tiles, so they can explore and understand. If you do not have student sets, students can use the digital algebra tiles provided in the Student PowerPoints / Google Slides or printable paper ones included in the PDF.

The lessons include visuals and examples. They work great with student white boards , so the teacher can easily see work and thinking by the students. You might also choose to have students type their responses on the Student PowerPoints / Google Slides.

Algebra tiles are a tool to add real meaning and conceptual understanding to working with polynomials!

This set of lessons was created to help you implement manipulatives and conceptual understanding in your algebra classroom. The algebra tiles, various methods, and problems will push students into a deeper understanding of working with polynomials. Instead of memorizing steps, they will be exploring, problem solving, thinking, and gaining a true understanding of operating with polynomials.
