American Revolution Battle of the Battlefields Project

Sometimes learning about battles can be boring for students. In this project, students research and debate which battle was the most important in The American Revolution in a collaborative, engaging and authentic manner. This can be done as a research project or you can use the provided background information on each battle so you can do it as self contained project in the classroom.

What is included:

1. Project directions for teachers.
2. 2 rubrics for the presentation and letter to The President
3. Battlefield chart
4. 2-3 pages summary for each battle.

Here is what students do:

1. Each group researches one of 8 battles...use internet, textbook, etc.
2. Each group presents their battle to the class attempting to persuade the class that their battle is the most important in the American Revolution.
3. As a class, students discuss, debate and vote for the most important battle.
4. Students write a summary letter to the President or other government official asking for funding for a new museum.

Here is a synopsis of what students do in this American Revolution Project:

Your class has been selected by the President to serve as the Battlefield Research Analysis Group (BRAG). He asks that you investigate this matter and recommend one battle as being the most important to American victory during the Revolutionary War. As mentioned above, the President will award $1,000,000 for the establishment of a museum at the battle site you choose. The museum is intended to educate people about the major battles of the Revolutionary War – particularly the battle that your class selects as being most important to the final American victory.
