Product 4: Graphic Organizer. I have used this 4-step method for identifying tone successfully for years in my high school English classes! This pdf is ready to print and distribute for use with any text.

Help your students learn to read more closely as they infer author's intentions, paying careful attention to word choice.

I first have students complete this activity as a whole class with a poem or song. Then I either choose a text for them to examine (poetry or informational) depending on what we are studying, and finally they determine the tone of a text of their choice using this handout as a guide.

Scaffolded supports are built in with a graphic organizer as you get your students to examine diction and the connotation of words.

This resource also includes I Can statements as well as a master list of tone words.

Product 5: Practice. This hyperdoc is ready to plug and play in your Google Classroom, and it can be edited to use with any poems you choose. This assignment is currently loaded with al Mala’ikah's "Elegy for a Woman of No Importance."

I have used this lesson as a review of tone, at the end of a poetry unit, as a tie-in to a women's rights unit, and as standardized test practice review. Scaffolded supports built in with graphic organizers as you get your students to carefully consider diction and the connotation of words.

This resource also includes a mini-lesson on the ACES writing strategy, a graphic organizer, a rubric, and I Can statements as well as a master list of tone words, a peer review form, and a self-editing guide.

Product 6: Practice. My students enjoyed comparing Maya Angelou's "Phenomenal Woman" to "Elegy for a Woman of No Importance." This practice reinforces the learning of the 4-step method for analyzing tone. This resource also includes a mini-lesson on the ACES writing strategy, a graphic organizer, a rubric, and I Can statements as well as a master list of tone words, a peer review form, and a self-editing guide.

Craft and Structure:  RL.9-10.4 I can determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text and analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.  Key Ideas and Evidence RL.9-10.1 I can cite strong, thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. W.9-10.1 I can write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant, sufficient evidence.

Product 7. Practice. Use the 4-step tone graphic organizer to determine the meaning of unknown words in "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath, "This is Just to Say" by William Carlos Williams, "The Tao of the Black Plastic Comb" by Glenis Redmond, and then a poem of their choice.

Product 8. Context clues mini lesson and graphic organizer. Students create their own personal vocabulary journals as they read whole class texts or texts of choice.

Product 9. Audience Mini-lesson and Practice. This activity is an absolute crowd favorite. Students learn about the choices authors make and how their word choice varies depending on the audience. Fun, engaging, and sure to get a few laughs!
