Make teaching Anatomy & Physiology easy with this fully editable Anatomy of the Heart All-in-One Sheep Dissection Lab Activity and Review Worksheet. Get the most out of your sheep heart dissection. Complete student background information is included with labeled images for identifying internal and external sheep heart anatomical structures. No prior knowledge of heart anatomy is required. Students learn both internal and external anatomy of the heart, the flow of blood through the heart, and characteristics of cardiac muscle cells. Complete lab objectives are listed below. For easy grading, students are asked to mark completion of each lab activity step as they are completed. Dissection images are provided to make dissection easy. Once finished, students will complete the lab review worksheet questions as part of the lab. Or, use the review worksheet as a lab quiz. You can use this resource as a comprehensive introduction to anatomy of the heart or use the review worksheet as homework, or as a review assessment. Teacher answer key is provided! 11 pages including cover page and teacher answer key.
This lab activity is divided into five parts:
- Part I: Background information
- Part II: Activity 1 - Observing the External Anatomy of the Sheep Heart
- Part III: Activity 2 - Dissection of the Internal Anatomy of the Sheep Heart
- Part IV: Activity 3 - Observing Cardiac Muscle Cells
- Part V: Lab Review Worksheet
Laboratory Objectives:
- Describe the location of the heart in the body and identify its major anatomical areas on an appropriate model or diagram.
- Trace the pathway of blood through the heart.
- Compare pulmonary and systemic circuits and explain the operation of heart valves.
- Name and locate the major anatomical areas and structures of the heart on/in an appropriate model, diagram, or dissected sheep heart, and explain the function of each.
- Trace the direction of blood flow through the heart.
- Review the histology of cardiac muscle.
Materials
- Student lab sheet for each student
- Disposable gloves
- Heart model (optional)
- Microscope for each student group
- Preserved sheep hearts for dissection
- Dissection tray
- Dissection kit
- Prepared slide of cardiac muscle tissue (longitudinal cross section)
Lab Safety: Gloves, Goggles. Apron, Sharp Objects

Content Standards Covered:
Students will analyze the physical, chemical, and biological properties of process systems as these relate to transportation, absorption and excretion, including cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, excretory, and immune systems.
- Analyze and explain the relationships between the cardiovascular and respiratory systems as they obtain oxygen needed for oxidation of nutrients and removal of carbon dioxide.
- Describe the effects of aging on body systems.
