In this lesson students are introduced to ions and isotopes. By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

  • Determine if an ion is a cation or anion
  • Using the mass number, atomic number, and ion charge determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
  • Represent the ion and isotope in both hyphen notation and using the nuclear symbol
  • Use the element’s periodic square to gain information needed to calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
