Description

Since different reading passages are written for different reasons, it’s essential to help students identify the author’s purpose while reading.

In this 3-day reading comprehension mini-unit, students will learn about the three main categories of author’s purpose. Through fun and engaging activities like an Author’s Purpose Spinner, Mini-Passage Hunt, and Sorting Race, students will be actively involved in their learning. They’ll also discover how to figure out the author’s purpose through direct instruction and by reading six reading comprehension passages. In this mini-unit, students will also write to inform, persuade, and entertain. It’s filled with hands-on learning and ample opportunities to practice the critical reading skill of identifying author’s purpose.

Great News! The student packet is also available as a Google Slides resource for students. In addition to the PDF version, students can complete the packet pages via a file sharing service such as Google Drive, Google Classroom, or in the internet “cloud.” The digital version of the packet is accessible from any computer and allows students to complete their work online.

* FYI: The anticipatory set activities that accompany each lesson are NOT in a digital format. They will still need to be printed for students due to the hands-on and interactive nature of the activities.
