Author's Purpose Interactive Notebook Activity, Test, Posters, Task Cards: Persuade Inform Entertain Explain Describe
This Author's Purpose pack is for teaching the expanded 5 author's purposes: Persuade, Inform, Entertain, Explain, and Describe. Teach author's purpose with these 5 colorful posters including definitions and examples and 28 task cards for upper grades. Also included is a foldable (blank and labeled) and an objective test that assesses knowledge of the purpose definitions and examples as well as analysis of paragraphs to determine author's purpose.
The paragraphs on the task cards and test for author's purpose are more complex than other cards intended for use with 2nd-3rd graders. The paragraphs average about 6-8 lengthy sentences with more complex text to challenge students in upper elementary and middle grades. Additionally, students must dig deeper to determine the author's purpose as it is not always a clear cut, easy answer.
The task cards include 2 questions: What is the author's purpose? and - How do you know? The task card answer sheet includes a section for listing the purpose as well as providing evidence. The answer key includes the correct purpose as well as sample answers for evidence even though answers may vary slightly.
The posters include bold text that is easy to read a distance away. They can be used as "slides" projected for students while you teach the 5 author's purposes or printed and displayed in your classroom.
