What educators are saying

These cards are some of my favorite tpt purchases. I love that the students are learning new vocabulary while discussing the cards. There is great scaffolding with definition cards too for those who need the extra support. I've bought all the sets and am eagerly waiting for more!
This was amazing! My students loved how each scenario was presented and I was able to hold their attention through the entire class period.

Description

This funny activity will give your students practice analyzing an author's tone!

Tone is one of those words that seems overwhelming to middle-school students, but attitude is something they are all too familiar with. What many kids don't realize is that an author's tone and an author's attitude are actually the same thing!

In this engaging activity, your students will read 10 fast-food orders. Each customer orders the exact same menu items, but each customer has a very different attitude or tone as they order.

The following tones are included

  • Accusatory
  • Admiring
  • Aggressive
  • Condescending
  • Critical
  • Defensive
  • Detached
  • Formal
  • Optimistic
  • Pleading

Two assessment options are included:

Option 1: Students are given a packet that includes the 10 fast-food orders and a simple matching worksheet. As they read the passages, students highlight words that give them clues about the customer's attitude. They then match each passage to the tone that best describes it. This option is perfect for sub plans or for a day when you need to rest, as students can work independently.

Option 2: The class reads each fast-food order together, and each passage is posted on a classroom wall after it is read. The class is divided into 10 small teams, and 1 person on each team is given a tone card (with tape on the back) and then blindfolded. The "seeing" teammates walk around the room, re-read the passages, look for tone clues, and shout directions at their blindfolded teammates until the tone cards are successfully stuck on the passages that match them.

So what exactly is included?
