Such a fun activity for Tone with 6th graders. It helped them learn the difference between tone and mood. Thank you!
This was a great change of pace from identifying the tone in a text. This was a great community builder.

Description

Students need to learn the important skill of analyzing texts to determine the author's tone, but terms like author's tone can sound intimidating to students at first. This fun game gives them the opportunity to act out a variety of literary tones with their peers.

First, the teacher divides the classroom into several groups and gives each character a tone card. The teacher then reads a situation from the situation sheet, and the students have a couple of minutes (or no time at all for true improv) to plan a 30-60 second skit in which they respond to the situation in their given tone. After each group performs their improv skit, the teacher displays the tones on the board, and the groups get to guess which tone they just witnessed! It's a hilarious and effective way to get kids thinking more deeply about the attitude different authors may have about the same subject and how these attitudes affect their words.

This recourse includes the following:

  • 1 Instructions page to get you started
  • 40 Tone cards to give your students practice with a variety of common literary tones
  • 5 PowerPoint tone slides to display when your students are ready to make their guesses
  • 1 Situation sheet with random and silly scenarios for each team to act out, using their given tones
  • 1 Example sheet to help students understand the game and how it works

Enjoy lots of laughs and lots of learning with this fun game!
