Apartheid in South Africa Image Analysis: Vocabulary Practice
After students learned about Apartheid, I had them complete this activity. It was a great way to help them to practice those key vocabulary, but also to help them understand what people were going through during Apartheid in South Africa. All learners were able to complete this assignment and the pictures vary in difficulty, so if a student was stuck they could look at another one. No prep work needed to teach this assignment.
Part 1- Have students complete the vocabulary introduction sheet to familiarize themselves with the vocabulary for this lesson. Ask students to share out their simplified definition and what they drew for the image.
Part 2- Print out the images that you want to use and number them on the back. Have students go through the images and complete the chart. There are a total of 20 images, but you can decide how many you want students to analyze. On the chart students must:
- Describe the image.
- Describe what you think the people in the pictures are thinking or feeling OR Describe how people might have felt if they saw one of those signs. There are no right or wrong answers.
- What new vocabulary word(s) from the standard do you think describes this picture? WHY? (Oppression, Discrimination, Segregation, Racism, Civil Rights, and Prejudice)
