    Frequently Asked Questions:

    What books do you use?

Get the list of books here. I strive to create lessons with new titles, so you must purchase the books or use your public library. Most authors have three books, with some having two or four. Some activities can be edited to work with other read alouds.

What is the difference between this and your FULL YEAR LIBRARY CURRICULUM FOR K-5?

The FULL YEAR LIBRARY CURRICULUM FOR K-5 has lessons on library skills and multi-class research projects. I received many requests for a curriculum with activities for one class and author and illustrator studies, so here it is! You do not need to purchase both. However, no books or lessons repeat, so you can grab both if you want!

I noticed some of the writing templates are the same. Why is this?

Students need routine, and there is nothing wrong with using the same writing template with a different prompt. See the preview for more lesson examples. I am always transparent in what I sell because I want you to be excited to teach these lessons!

I don’t have all the book titles. What should I do?

Utilize your public library or substitute with books that are in your collection. I strive to create new, relevant, diverse read alouds so many titles are new. See the preview for my recommended books.

Does it cover all the AASL standards?

It does not cover all the AASL standards. It covers I.A.1, I.B.3, V.A.1, IV.B.1, and III.D.1.

    What themes does this cover?

Topics include story elements, types of writing like opinion and persuasive, author’s purpose, author’s craft, nonfiction, and so much more! This is a read-aloud based curriculum. Many of the topics are the same year to year, as these skills build each year, like all curriculums.

Can I do these lessons in 30 minutes?

3-5 lessons include a read aloud and writing or drawing activity. You can easily adapt for 30 minutes. I provide tips on how to adapt for shorter and longer classes.

I have hour long classes. Will these lessons cover that time?

Yes! Incorporate silent reading, check out time, read aloud, mini lesson, writing/drawing activity and free choice at the end, and you have a perfect class.

My students don’t have laptops. Can I still use this?

Yes! You have the option of using laptops or not. K-2 lessons include a read aloud and writing or drawing activity. I have included everything you need to complete 3-5 lessons without technology. If you want students to use technology, some lessons have options for research with recommended websites. Directions are included for all activities to be completed in a blank PowerPoint or blank Google Slides.

I don’t have PowerPoint. How do I open this?

Download the file from TpT. Unzip it. Open the document titled "AuthorStudies_GoogleDrive_Links." Click on the links to create a copy in your Google Drive. The formatting should be the same.

    Will this curriculum be updated?

This curriculum was created in March 2024. It will go through minor updates. Sign up for my email list or follow me on TpT, or follow me on Instagram, to find out if it has been updated so you can get the updates for free.

One of the books you recommended is out of print. What should I do?

Contact me and I will provide an updated title if it is out of print. However, I cannot provide alternate titles if you do not have the recommended books.

If this doesn’t work for me, can I get a refund?

Before you purchase, make sure to view the preview. I have given you many samples so you know exactly what you are getting. Again, this is NOT a digital citizenship or technology curriculum. Refunds are not offered for digital products.
