Description

An award-winning filmmaker documents the birth and first year of life of four babies across the world. The children are Ponijao, who lives with her family near Opuwo, Namibia; Bayarjargal, who resides with his family in Mongolia, near Bayanchandmani; Mari, who lives with her family in Tokyo, Japan; and Hattie, who resides with her family in the United States, in San Francisco.

Students see the differences of growing up in different countries. All of them "ooh," "ahh," and giggle throughout. Yet, at the end of the film, it seems that we are all the quite similar.

The video guides are to help ignite deeper thinking and reflection on human development. Questions asked include: What made for happy babies? What was one thing that shocked you? How were the babies' development similar or different? It also asks students to look at the film as a whole to organize motor and language skills. Lastly, there are a half dozen questions regarding the order of events in the film.

The film guide brings in questions about stages of development as well as their perspective about the film and the babies' happiness in an attempt overcome egocentrism. Answer key is included.

Majority of the film guide could easily be used for World History, Global Connections, Anthropology, Sociology, Child or Human Development course, too.

NOTE: There is breastfeeding in this film/bare breasts of the mothers.
