What educators are saying

My students loved this resource. Very engaging. Will continue to use this resource next year with my SDC class.
A great resource for furthering my student's understanding of part part whole and the bar model method.

Description

Bar Model Worksheets: 204 Differentiated addition and subtraction word problem bar model worksheets. Worksheets include embedded student supports to help young mathematicians slow down during the model drawing process and methodically work through each step. Each worksheet is differentiated into 3 levels to help support learners at various levels of mastery.

Covers Addition & Subtraction within 5, 10, 20, and 100.

How to Use:

Students are invited to read through the entire story problem once without stopping. They read through the problem a 2nd time to text-code important information. Students are asked to circle each number in the story and underline the question. Text-coding helps students slow down, determine the correct operation, and reminds them to plug each number from the story into their model.

These bar model worksheets can be used as warm-ups to quickly engage students in mathematical thinking. They can also be used during guided or independent practice, as homework, or as extra practice for students who finish their assignments early. I recommend working through the steps of one or two worksheets as a whole class, modeling the steps as you go.

Differentiation:

The skill level is indicated by one, two, or three stars in the top right-hand corner of each worksheet. One star worksheets are useful for students who need extra scaffolding to help them reach their learning targets, two star worksheets are helpful for students who are beginning to grasp the concept, while three star worksheets are intended to challenge students who are demonstrating proficiency.

Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
