What educators are saying

I had students complete this activity when I was out for multiple days. It was challenging and engaging, and students were able to complete it independently. Great resource!
This was a wonderful no-prep activity that students enjoyed. I was able to have them work on it with a substitute once I explained how the simulation worked.

Description

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ In this fun webquest, students will learn how water quality affects biodiversity, how pollutants are biomagnified in the food web, and will test, collect data, and analyze water quality in a virtual lab. Editable MS Word, PDF, and Google Slides all included!

This activity covers biomagnification, water pollution, and biodiversity, and makes a great introduction, review, absent student work, sub-plan, guided practice, or student-led teaching tool. Your students will complete online activities and will lead their own learning as they complete this editable, printable, and digital webquest.

Topics

• Biodiversity

• Biomagnification and DDT

• Water Pollution and Water Quality

• Scientific Method with Graphing & Analysis

• Dissolved Oxygen, pH, and Nitrates

• Ecosystem Recovery

Students will learn and become environmental scientists with a fun, interactive, and highly informational virtual computer game! Students will use the scientific method to test, analyze, and virtually graph the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen, pesticides, and fertilizer on the water quality and biodiversity of an ecosystem. Your students act as eco-detectives, and will travel to the Peril River to test water quality and remedy the situation.

Student will follow clear directions to answer chunked questions as they move through the virtual activities. The student handout includes tinyURLs, long URLs, and QR Codes to help students easily reach each virtual activity to immediately begin learning and applying their new knowledge. Your students will have no confusion as they move through the activities and will be on task, having fun, and learning!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSHS-LS2-7
Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity. Examples of human activities can include urbanization, building dams, and dissemination of invasive species.
NGSSMS-LS2-5
Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. Examples of ecosystem services could include water purification, nutrient recycling, and prevention of soil erosion. Examples of design solution constraints could include scientific, economic, and social considerations.
NGSSMS-LS2-4
Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations. Emphasis is on recognizing patterns in data and making warranted inferences about changes in populations, and on evaluating empirical evidence supporting arguments about changes to ecosystems.
NGSSMS-ESS3-3
Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment. Examples of the design process include examining human environmental impacts, assessing the kinds of solutions that are feasible, and designing and evaluating solutions that could reduce that impact. Examples of human impacts can include water usage (such as the withdrawal of water from streams and aquifers or the construction of dams and levees), land usage (such as urban development, agriculture, or the removal of wetlands), and pollution (such as of the air, water, or land).
NGSSHS-ESS3-4
Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems. Examples of data on the impacts of human activities could include the quantities and types of pollutants released, changes to biomass and species diversity, or areal changes in land surface use (such as for urban development, agriculture and livestock, or surface mining). Examples for limiting future impacts could range from local efforts (such as reducing, reusing, and recycling resources) to large-scale geoengineering design solutions (such as altering global temperatures by making large changes to the atmosphere or ocean).
