What educators are saying

My students loved this activity! We had so much fun discussing the evidence that collected and my students were able to connect the research of blood types to the crime scene evidence. I used this as a culminating activity at the end of my genetics unit in Life Science
Many of my students struggled to get their pedigree setup, but after we went over it together, they were very interested in figuring out the mystery.

Description

In this lab activity, students will solve a theft crime using their knowledge of pedigrees and the inheritance of traits (like ear lobe attachment and blood type) to create a pedigree of a mystery family. They will then determine the genotypes of the family members in order to identify the thief. At the end of the lab activity, students will answer questions about their findings and defend their answers with evidence and reasoning.

Is this aligned to Next Generation Science Standards*?

YES! Specifically, it is aligned with HS-LS3-1: Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring.
