Analyze a Song as A Poem: Bob Dylan's Hurricane

This resource uses Bob Dylan’s song “Hurricane” to teach the following skills: close reading, character analysis, inferences, mood and tone, and point of view. This complete lesson plan with all student materials for “Hurricane” guides students through three readings of the song, each focused on a different lens of analysis. The lesson culminates in a writing prompt in which students analyze the social commentary Dylan is making through the song.
This resource directly addresses the following standards: R1 (read closely, make inferences, cite evidence), R3 (interaction between individuals over the course of a text), R6 (point of view and author’s purpose) and W2 (expository writing). This lesson will take at least 2 days to teach, and is designed for grades 8-10.
Note that this resource does not include the lyrics for the song, due to copyright restrictions.
