How to use this Book Review Activity:

This differentiated activity encourages students to reflect on and analyze novels studied in class through book reviews! Students are prompted to explore key elements of any story and analyze the characters, themes, and conflict while considering their own personal opinions and reactions.

There are two formats offered with this assignment: a video book review or written book review. The worksheets and assignment outlines are formatted to provide you with the option to assign either the video book review or written book review exclusively, or assign both options to students.

You can begin this activity by introducing the Book Review Slideshow Lesson to your students. This slideshow teaches the intent behind creating a book review and provides an overview of the different types of book reviews students might encounter in both digital and print media outlets. Some examples of book reviews have also been included.

You can also provide this overview by distributing the Informational Handout to your students. This handout also includes a step-by-step guide for creating a book review. Students can refer back to the handout as they brainstorm, plan, and create their book reviews, using it as a reference for meeting project expectations and fostering a deeper understanding of the book review process.

Students can then begin the Book Review Assignment Outline. This assignment outline will help them organize their literary analysis and structure their book reviews effectively for both video and written presentations. This outline is provided in both editable and ready-to-print formats to meet your classroom needs.

Encourage students to exchange their completed scripts for peer feedback and suggestions. This collaborative process will help them refine their ideas and improve the overall quality of their book reviews. Once students have received feedback and made revisions to their scripts, they can use their final draft as a guide when recording their video or writing their blog for book reviews.

To evaluate this assignment, an editable and ready-to-print 4-level rubric has been provided. You can modify the success criteria in order to meet the needs of your unique classroom and curriculum expectations.
