What educators are saying

My students were greatly engaged in this activity. We use it at least once a week. They keep a copy in their Google Drive so that when I have a substitute they know to go directly to CNN10 and have a ready made activity to do independently for a substitute.
LOVE THIS resource! Came in very handy, was easy to use, and worked well with CNN 10 pieces. The EASEL versions were a little challenging at first but also great to use.

Description

Keep your students focused and engaged while watching CNN 10 or any other news program! These 17 different current event response sheets will help your students engage with the news like never before as they grow in their ability to describe, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create on a daily basis. The 17 response sheets offer a wide variety of choice and are aligned with Common Core Standards. They strengthen ELA and social studies skills through cross-curricular activities and promote higher-level thinking which leads to amazing, thoughtful class discussions.

These skills are covered:

· Mapping locations

· Creating questions with answers for a partner or the class

· Identifying facts and opinions

· Drawing pictures which show cause and effect

· Identifying problems and identifying or creating solutions

· Understanding a news story and stating how it could affect yourself or others

· The 5 W’s: who, what, when, where, why

· Identifying and understanding different points of view

· Making predictions

· Identifying and using new or challenging vocabulary words

· Writing a summary with a main idea, supporting details, and conclusion

· Identifying ways to personally make a difference

· Drawing a political cartoon

· Creating a Haiku poem related to the news

· Creating a PSA (public service announcement) to inform or persuade others

· Connecting news stories to other news stories or topics studied in class

· Classifying a week of news stories as most important, most controversial, most relatable, and most inspiring

My students work on a different response sheet each day of the week. The class discussions afterwards are quite impressive as they share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas with others. I especially love the thoughtful questions they come up with for each other. It really helps them relate the news to their own lives and other events in history that we’ve learned about in class.

What's included:

  • 17 printable current event response sheets (PDF) (16 half sheets & 1 full sheet)
