This unit places a significant focus on the experiences, stories and perspectives of FIRST NATIONS, BLACK CANADIANS, ASIAN CANADIANS and WOMEN during World War One. 

HISTORICAL THINKING CONCEPTS (HTCs) included in the unit: historical significance, cause and consequence, continuity and change, historical perspective, ethical judgment, and evidence and sourcing. Each HTC is fully explained and each lesson in the unit focuses on one HTC.

BIG QUESTIONS for this unit include:

  • What was the most important cause of WWI?
  • Was it worse to fight on land, at sea or in the air?
  • Which Canadian battle was the most significant?
  • Why did Canadians of diverse backgrounds volunteer for WWI?
  • How reliable was the information presented in Canadian government propaganda?
  • Did WWI make Canada a stronger or weaker country?
  • How fair was the Treaty of Versailles?
