Learning Objective

After reading a fictional passage, students will identify character traits for the main characters.

Description

Are you searching for a step-by-step PowerPoint that can be used to introduce character traits to your students in a way that will grab their attention? You've come to the right place! This 36-slide PowerPoint is highly interactive. It begins by distinguishing character traits from emotions and physical traits. It then focuses on the skill of inferencing by using feelings, actions, dialogue, and thoughts found in the text. This PowerPoint is designed to build your students' character trait vocabulary. It features twelve original short reading passages!

After the concept of character traits is introduced, students are introduced to four traits at a time. After a definition is presented, students are given multiple passages to read & determine which of the four traits apply to certain characters. (Sixteen traits and 12 passages are presented in this section.)

PowerPoints filled with visuals are ideal for teaching new content to students because PowerPoints tend to be highly engaging and concepts can be easily broken down into understandable chunks of information. But let's face it... they are so time-consuming to create! Fortunately, now you have an option of using one that is already complete, kid-tested, and ready to go for you!

HERE'S THE SEQUENCE OF TOPICS COVERED IN THIS POWERPOINT:

Slides 1-5: Introduction to Character Traits: What is a character trait?

Slides 6-16: Using Feelings, Actions, Dialogue, and Thoughts within the text to Infer Character Traits

Slides 17-21: Character Trait Definitions and Passages: Set 1 (sly, foolish, diligent, lazy)

Slides 22-26: Character Trait Definitions and Passages: Set 2 (arrogant, bossy, optimistic, pessimistic)

Slides 27-31: Character Trait Definitions and Passages: Set 3 (determined, selfish, irresponsible, reliable)

Slides 32-36: Character Trait Definitions and Passages: Set 2 (considerate, insensitive, brave, stubborn)

This file also includes an 8-page PowerPoint companion handout. Students will remain especially engaged when they write on their own handout as you advance through the PowerPoint. When complete, they have a valuable tool for future reference! The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format. The digital version is compatible with Google Slides.

Here's what teachers like you have to say about this PowerPoint:

⭐️ Amanda F. said, "I used components of this during an observation and it was fantastic! Students were engaged and had the opportunity to build their vocabulary."

⭐️ Helayna C. said, "My students were engaged fully while using this resource. Everything was used in this unit and it was beautifully put together. It is a well organized resource and it was easy to use. I was able to teach the skill with ease using this unit."

⭐️ Kirsten H. said, "My students enjoyed reading the passages and identifying character traits. A few of them even said it was a fun activity. I loved how each passage had 4 character trait options to choose from, which aligns well with a multiple-choice test. My students are still using the character traits on the PowerPoint to describe characters in books and passages we are reading! So I know this resource stuck with them!

⭐️ Michelle J. said, "I loved it. Often, when you ask a student to describe a character, they say "good" or " mean". They don't have a strong enough vocabulary to use other words. These PowerPoint slides introduced them to more powerful words like 'bossy" or 'determined". It opened up a lot of communication about the terms."

⭐️ Courtney W. said, "A perfect way to introduce character traits! I loved that it had LOTS of examples of different types of character traits. This helps my students build up their vocabulary when it comes to describing characters in their stories."
