CHINESE NEW YEAR RESEARCH GUIDES (DAYS 1-3)

• 3-day small group research unit
• Each guide contains nine questions that are easily found through research.
• Groups research one of four Chinese New Year categories: Symbols and Luck, Food and Drink, Chinese New Year, and Chinese Mythology.
• Students will need to share their research with each other in order to be successful on the PowerPoint trivia game (Day 5).
• Includes answer keys.
• Updated for 2024 The Year of the Dragon.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CROSSWORD PUZZLE (DAY 3, for early finishers)

• Optional activity that is great for students who finish early or if you have extra time after the research activities on Days 1-3.
• Meant as review and is not necessary to the unit since the questions are all things they will encounter in other parts of the unit.
• Includes answer key.

READER'S THEATER SCRIPT #1 (DAY 4)

• "The Race for the Zodiac" - This Reader's Theater script tells the Chinese mythological story about a great race that determined which animals would represent each year of the 12-year cycle. The script is five pages long, with 16 speaking parts. It is humorous and perfect for middle schoolers' wry humor.
• You probably only have time on Day 4 for one reader's theater script, but I've included two so that more students can have a speaking part.
• Divide class into two large groups to perform the reader's theater scripts for each other.

READER'S THEATER SCRIPT #2 (DAY 4, if time allows)

• "Ting Ting and the Monster Nian"
• This is another story from Chinese mythology about a beast called Nian that terrorized Chinese villages every New Year...until a little girl figured out what scared him. This script is seven pages long, with seven speaking parts.
• Script #2 is a bonus script that I added to the original Research Unit, so it does not appear in the unit lesson instructions.

CHINESE NEW YEAR TRIVIA GAME (DAY 5)

• Game board - students select a category and dollar amount
• 25 question slides and 25 answer slides
• Prior knowledge is not needed to play the game, but all the questions do appear in the research project and reader's theater scripts.
