*****Christmas is a Christian holiday. The passages that focus on how Christmas is celebrated may reference religious traditions and customs in those countries. Keep this in mind when determining if this resource is a good fit for your students. *****

Each year, it seems that my students need significant reading comprehension practice, above and beyond our standards. They also need a lot of practice in nonfiction reading comprehension. I created this “Christmas Reading Comprehension Activity” to meet this need.

About the Christmas Reading Comprehension Passages and Questions

*Included in this resource are 12 nonfiction passages (paragraph length) each with details on how a different country celebrates the Christmas season (or other related winter holidays).

*The texts are short and NOT meant to be a thorough text on each country. Instead, they provide a few facts and interesting details to engage students (and make them curious to learn more). Click here for a resource that includes longer, more detailed passages.

*With each passage are 4 comprehension questions that can be answered using the text.

*The texts in this resource are short, but rigorous. They are written at the top of the lexile range for 4th and 5th graders.

*The reading comprehension questions can be answered using the information in the text. ***The reading comprehension questions in this set are not meant to trick or challenge students.

Reading Comprehension Practice: TWO Options for Use

Option 1: Around the Room Activity (recommended) – Get your students moving and reading by taping the texts and questions around the room.

Option 2: Regular Printable Version – I have also included a regular printable version of the passages and questions (one passage and set of questions per page) as another option.

Digital Christmas Reading Comprehension Practice: TWO Options for Use

The digital Christmas reading comprehension is designed for use with Google Slides.

There are two digital versions included:

Version 1 - Choice Board of Topics – From a digital menu, the students choose which topics they want to read and practice comprehension with. You can assign all of the topics or sets of 4 topics.

Version 2 - Single Text Version – Using this version, you can assign the texts and questions that you want each student to complete.

Please see the video preview to see how the digital Christmas reading practice works.
