What educators are saying

Perfect for paragraph writing practice! My students really loved writing this. They were very creative and loved making up a villainous activity and then trying to convince Santa of their innocence. Many of them ventured out of the list of ideas and really got creative.
My 7th graders enjoyed this creative writing assignment. It came in handy when I had to be out. The guest teacher complimented the activity and said the students had a lot of fun writing.

Description

Dear Santa ... I Can Explain is a fun holiday or Christmas activity that has students writing a persuasive letter to Santa from the point of view of a well-known villain from childrens' stories, movies, fairy tales, etc.

Writing in role, students must convince Santa that they don't deserve a spot on the naughty list - what they are infamous for has all been a misunderstanding.

This resource contains a full set of instructions, brain storm web, completed brain storm web, pre-writing graphic organizer, 5 different sheets of Christmas stationery, a drawing page, and a completed letter. I have also included a picture of how I display these projects on a bulletin board display.

Note: This resource has been updated to include a rubric as well as b&w copies of all the pages.

For a fun drama activity to accompany this writing activity, check out my Dear Santa, I Can Explain Drama Circle.
