What educators are saying

This was used during tutoring sessions and as a refresher prior to state testing. The kids were engaged, excited, and it really helped to develop their understanding and was a great activity prior to testing.
This was a really thorough resource that helped provide a visual to my struggling students in writing.

Description

Want to teach your students about writing text evidence in their essays, but you're not sure where to begin? Look no more! This resource comes with a PowerPoint and a companion handout that makes it easy to teach students what text evidence is, how to smoothly incorporate it into their essays, and how to cite it- skills that can be challenging to teach.

The 174-slide PowerPoint that comes with this product is very thorough and engaging. It tells students that they are like detectives, but instead of looking for criminal evidence, they need to find text evidence so that they can prove their writing. It teaches students how to paraphrase text evidence and how to add direct quotations. It also teaches students when and how to cite their text evidence.

A PowerPoint companion handout is included so that students can follow along and take notes while they progress through the PowerPoint. Vocabulary posters/anchor charts are also included. These can be hung in your room so that students can refer to them anytime they are working on an opinion or informative essay and need to add text evidence.

**Please click the preview where you will be able to see all that is included with this resource.

Here is what's included:

-A 4-day lesson plan (the lesson plan explains how to use everything that's included in this product)

-A 174-slide PowerPoint that teaches students how to support/prove their essays with text evidence.

-An informational passage about cats (students use this passage towards the beginning of the PowerPoint to look for specific text evidence)

-A PowerPoint companion handout (Students fill in the blanks as they progress through the PowerPoint)

-A review worksheet with 14 questions

-A paraphrasing/direct quotations handout (students can use this the rest of the year whenever they are writing an essay that requires adding text evidence)

-A text evidence worksheet that has students practice adding text evidence to sample essay sentences (an answer key is included)

-An informational passage about dogs (students look through this passage and the cats passage to help them complete the worksheet mentioned above)

-Vocabulary posters (9 different terms & 3 different designs to choose from)

-A cats vs. dogs opinion writing prompt (after you are all done using the resources included in this product, you can assign the students the writing prompt, along with the cats passage and the dog passage and have them write an essay that includes text evidence)

⭐4-Day Lesson Plan

The 4-day lesson plan that is included gives instructions on how to use all of the resources included in this product. So if all of this information seems overwhelming, rest assured that you will know what to do. Just follow the detailed lesson plan. :) The days are as follows:

Days 1-3

Students fill out the PowerPoint companion handout as they learn about text evidence. (All you have to do is open the PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will make it so easy to teach text evidence). Review questions are at the end of the PowerPoint so that students can remember all that they just learned.

Day 4

Students use the paraphrasing & direct quotation handout and two passages (one about cats and one about dogs) to complete a worksheet. The worksheet has students read sentences that are not supported by text evidence. Students use the passages to find supportive evidence and then integrate text evidence by paraphrasing or by using a direct quotation. Sample answers are provided so you can know how to guide the students.
