What educators are saying

Students absolutely love this game! They had so much fun and learn in the process. They were engaged and stayed on task. Teacher and student friendly! Great everyday resource.
This was a great first week of school activity to do with my kids. They were engaged the whole time and wanted to play multiple times!

Description

This Classroom Scattergories Game is a great icebreaker for the beginning of the year, a fun game for the end of the year, or perfect to play throughout the year! This resource includes both a printable and digital version. It can be played as a full class with the students playing individually or in pairs or teams that compete during each round. The game can be made as short or long as you want it, so it's also a fun time filler that keeps students thinking. It's great for sub plans, to use during a class party, or see below for more great times to play Scattergories in the classroom.

  • Play fully printable with the printable lists, printable spinner, and clock or phone timer
  • Play fully digital by assigning the list slides to students in Google Classroom and using the digital spinner and digital timer included.
  • Play a combo of printable & digital- print the lists for students or teams to write the answers, but use the digital spinner to pick the letter for each round and digital timer on your big screen.

How do you play Scattergories in the classroom?

  1. Select your list (there’s six to choose from and one blank list to create your own)
  2. Determine the key letter with the printable or digital spinner
  3. Start the clock using your phone timer or digital timer (3 and 5 minute options)
  4. Begin the game! Students or teams will write in one answer for each category on the list. Every answer must begin with the key letter selected!
  5. Score! When the timer’s up, stop writing and share answers for scoring.

You can make this game as long or short as your want. You could play one or two rounds if you only have a short amount of time… or you could work through all six lists plus spin for a different letter and play a list or two again! Or for a fun extention, have your students create their own list with the blank option and play one of the student created lists.

Your download is a PDF with the printable version and clickable link to the Google Slide version for the digital option on the first page of instructions. The digital game is formatted for widescreen and the lists are editable in Google Slides. The printable lists are in a PDF format and are a half page format to save paper. They are not editable.

Classroom Scattergories is great for:

  • a beginning of the year community building activity for students or staff
  • during a class party or Friday Fun Day
  • sub plans
  • a time filler that still requires thinking and cooperative learning
  • after a test
  • the end of the year
  • before Thanksgiving, winter, or spring break.
  • building community after you change groups

Have fun!
