Composing by Chance for Beginners Digital Music Lessons for Middle School

Using PowerPoint/Google Slides, this ready-to-go digital activity (NO material prep needed) is designed to scaffold composition instruction for upper elementary and middle school students in a fun and engaging manner that guides students deliberately towards independent composition later.

For Part One and Part Two, students will randomly generate a number. That number will have an assigned note or pitch and students will create their melody based on chance. Each part isolates a musical element to help students reinforce their skills before moving on to Part Three.

Part Three gives students the German Folk song, Music Alone Shall Live. The first and last measure will remain the same and students will manipulate one musical element however they would like as arranging practice. Students are unable to change the time signature or the key for Part Three and only change one element at a time - great for all students, but especially your SPED students. This activity can be used for accommodations like working with fewer items on the page while still assessing content knowledge, use of manipulatives digitally, and isolating musical elements to increase understanding.

(For you Chorus teachers, this can be a fun way to reintroduce that round you taught them before!)

Giving students an open-ended assignment like "Compose 32 measures" can be daunting to a student, especially beginners. To nurture their skills, this activity places parameters that students can easily navigate without feeling overwhelmed and stressed.
