Electronic waste or e-waste is broadly defined as anything that is being thrown away by consumers that contains a circuit board. The 1st law of the Digital Age is “Newer is Better”. Old TV’s, phones and computers become obsolete electronic garbage called e-waste. Digital Dumping is the practice of exporting outdated equipment to developing countries like China and India. Peasant farmers, working for just $8/day, with burned hands are breaking down America’s Computers.

17. COMPUTER REPAIR INVESTIGATION

• The purpose of this investigation is to see if computer repair companies really know what they are doing and if they are charging the correct prices

• Many people are desperate to get their technology fixed and do not know much about their devices

• Marketplace TV rigged an apartment in Toronto, Canada with hidden cameras

• They created a small problem to a computer and called in 10 repair techies

• Only 30% of the techs were able to diagnose the problem

• In all of their testing, one techie performed poorly in every way – service, diagnosis, price and privacy

• They went to London Ontario to interview one of the founders of the company about this employee

• They interviewed 3 guys that used to work for computer repair companies

Marketplace TV found out…

• Tech Training is inconsistent (Here is a manual you are learning on your feet)

• Employees are encouraged to overcharge

• Techies sometimes copy private information

• Many computer owners don’t know much about their computers which makes it easy to scam people

· Common places to store your data include your computer, phone, USB or external hard drive

· Cloud based storage lets you save photos, docs and videos and automatically backs up your stuff so if your computer breaks down or you lose your phone, your data is safe

· Cloud based storage is not saving your data in the air or space

· It is saving your files on someone else’s large servers rather than on (or in addition to) your device that has limited storage
