Teaching connotation doesn't have to be complicated! These middle school connotation worksheets lay the concept out in a straightforward way that middle school students can easily understand. Use them as homework, classwork, partner practice, or whole-class test review. They're great for end-of-year ELA test prep - understanding connotation is such an important reading skill for both fiction and nonfiction reading passages!

(Note: some questions are grouped by reading passage, so you won't want to shuffle them!)
Pages one and two contain eight sentences each with "connotation" words in bold; students will identify the connotation as positive or negative and then write a sentence using a word with either the opposite or a stronger connotation. (This activity is also great for helping students use connotation in their writing to create tone!) The bottom of both pages have boxes filled with descriptive words, and students are asked to circle words with certain connotations. Sorting the words really helps them pinpoint the difference between words with positive and negative connotations as well as levels of connotation.
Pages three and four each include a short passage with several questions about words' connotations, as well as plot and characterization inferences based on connotations. These pages are excellent for general reading test review, and the specific connotation questions provide great focused practice for this skill!
