Description

Context Clues Worksheets: Your students will read ten sentences related to December holidays. To answer the question, they will need to use context clues to decipher the meaning of a word.

I created this because I have found that not only my ELL's, but the vast majority of students at my school struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests. As a result, I created a series of holiday worksheets that would allow students to practice using context clues in an engaging way at multiple times throughout the school year. This particular set of worksheets is designed to be used during the month of December.

The underlined words include: trimmed, exquisite, illuminated, icon, venerated, stirring, tarnished, dread, stunning, and enthralled.

This worksheet can be printed back-to-back. An answer key is included.

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
  2. Easel Activity- Students complete this digital version of the activity on a device. It contains 17 slides. (This version has four more questions than the other two versions.) Students read each passage and answer each multiple-choice question related to the meaning of underlined words. This activity is self-checking, so students receive immediate feedback. On the last slide, students determine how many slides they answered correctly. Then, they choose 1-3 holiday stickers (based on how many correct answers they had), and drag them to their water bottle. Stickers include Hanukkah and Christmas stickers.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading a passage, students select the meaning of the underlined word from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
