Description

Utilize tobacco use in an investigation of number sense, linear equations, linear functions, and scatterplot in this 21st Century Math Project. Students will find out the startling truth behind the amount of cigarettes a smoker may use in their lifetime, the financial cost of the habit (including inflation), as well as the foretold effect on their health. I've never had students more engaged than when I do this project. The results of this project can have a lifelong impact on a learner...the best part is they are discovering this on their own.

Culminating in a PSA, students can compare the costs between states (real data provided) and draw conclusions about differences across the country.

In this 15 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, and a thorough packet that will challenge your student's critical thinking skills. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

-- In "The Cost of Smoking", students will select two states for comparison and in order to complete the questions.

-- In "Financial Cost", students will use a lot of integrated math to determine the monetary cost of smoking for a lifetime. For example, students will set up expressions, evaluate them, solve unit rates and work with percents in an authentic context.

-- In "Health Cost", students will use a lot of integrated math to determine the health ramifications of smoking based on the latest studies.

-- The project concludes with a PSA that students can create to share evidence from their research with the world.

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Solve linear equations in one variable.
