Description

Counting with U.S. Coins Reader's Theater script

Level 1

Help your students learn all about U.S. coins with this fun Reader's Theater play. This engaging script is an easy way to integrate different subjects and hit your math money standards while reinforcing reading skills, fluency, and speaking and listening skills.

Students will learn how to identify each U.S. coin by name and image, how much each coin is worth, and how many of each coin are in one dollar. This script covers the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar.

Included in this resource is the script with colorful images of each coin (front and back), a coin identification practice page and answer key, and blackline images of each coin for students to color in order to further reinforce coin identification.

This script is written in rhyming stanzas, giving it a nice flow that is easy to read and understand. You could use this script to teach or reinforce rhyme, meter, or other poetry elements as well.

This is a Level 1 script meaning this would better meet the needs of "on-grade level" readers for 1st grade, "higher level readers" for Kindergarten, or your "below grade level readers" for grades 2nd or 3rd. There are 5 characters with equal lines, each representing a different coin.

You can use this script in small groups for reading or math, or even split your class into groups of 5 and let them read and practice this script together. After reading through the script, students can complete the practice page to reinforce their understanding of each coin, its name, its value, and how many of that coin are needed to make one dollar. This script is short and sweet so you can easily incorporate it into your busy day as a rotaion or small group activity.

There is also an answer key for the practice page included. You could hand out an answer key to let students check their own or one another’s work. The more students can check and correct their own mistakes, the more they tend to learn from them.

You can extend this mini lesson even further by letting students perform this play for their families or classmates. You could even invite a younger grade level in to help them learn about coins as well! It’s always fun to be able to make props and backdrops too. Have students color and cut out the coin images for quick and easy props!

This script is rich with vocabulary and has easy to understand explanations about each coin and it's value. Vocabulary is underlined throughout the script to reinforce math content and understanding. The repetition of reading a script and practicing lines is a great way to help students memorize any harder vocabulary words to read.
