What educators are saying

This resource provided a wonderful, organized guide to addressing all aspects of stuttering with my clients. I used with middle school aged children with a a range of severity.

Description

Everything you need to help a client increase their awareness of their stuttering and deal with negative thoughts and beliefs that may be impacting their fluency. This kit includes a full step-by-step therapy plan with worksheets, handouts, homework, and more.

Why Address Negative Thoughts and Beliefs about Stuttering?

When we work with clients who stutter, it’s extremely important to take a look at any negative thoughts and feelings that they’re having about their stuttering or speech.  If we can reduce negative thoughts and feelings and teach our clients strategies to deal with them, we are more likely to see better progress in therapy and better ability to use the stuttering-modification and fluency-enhancing strategies that we teach.

This kit and workbook will give you everything you need to walk a client through the process of gently bringing awareness to their disfluency and then walking through identifying and dealing with negative emotions.

What's Included:

  • Lesson Plans for the 8 Phases of Therapy
  • Sample Goals
  • Data Collection Sheets
  • No-Prep Therapy Activities and Workbook Pages for Every Phase
  • Homework Pages for Every Phase

This 43-page packet and workbook will give you everything you need to start working through negative thoughts and feelings in children with disfluency.  We know that these negative thoughts and feelings can impact a child’s ability to fully participate in therapy and to be able to use the speech-modification and fluency-enhancing strategies that we teach them.  Start therapy the right way by addressing those feelings in a systematic way that starts with awareness of one’s own stuttering.

Age Range: This packet is appropriate for children who are 4-18 years old
Follow the pages from front to back and you’ll have everything you need to work on the following phases of therapy for dealing with awareness and negative emotions:

Where to Start in Therapy for Clients who Stutter:

Sometimes it is hard to know where to start when you get a new speech therapy client who stutters. This kit is a great place to start as it begins with education. Here are the seven phases of this program:

  1. Education about How the Speech Mechanism Works and about Stuttering in General
  2. Gentle Guidance to Becoming Aware of One’s Own Stuttering
  3. Identifying Negative Emotions and Beliefs that are Affecting the Child’s Fluency
  4. Cognitive Restructuring to Replace Old, Negative Beliefs with New, Empowering Beliefs
  5. Desensitization to Help the Child Reduce Negative Reactions to Stuttering
  6. Self-Disclosure Activities to Help the Child Feel Comfortable Telling Others He/She Stutters
  7. Counseling/Support Activities that Connect the Child to Others who Stutter
  8. Continuation Plan for How to Continue Supporting the Child Once the Kit is Completed

Who is this For?

This kit was created by a speech-language pathologist to support her own clients who stutter. It is specifically designed to be used by speech-language pathologists who are trained to help clients who stutter. However, parents may also find beneficial information in this packet to support their child at home with his/her stuttering. We recommend that you speak with your child's speech-language pathologist about where to start with this program.
