Basic Dialogue Rules: handout notes or poster
Sometimes a good, clear set of notes with easily understandable examples is all a student needs to be able to practice a concept. I created these as a regular reference that can be posted on the wall or kept in a student’s binder or writing folder. They work well when introducing the topic in a lecture or guided practice. The notes explain the basic punctuating and capitalizing rules for dialogue (with both the dialogue tag at the beginning and at the end of the sentence).

Use this fun, fast-paced powerpoint game with your whole class to practice the skill of punctuating dialogue. Two student teams will compete to put the quotation marks, commas, periods, exclamation points, and question marks in the right places before the each other. This game is meant for students who have learned and begun to practice the basic dialogue punctuating rules and three types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory.) It can serve as a review game before a quiz, or simply as a fun, interactive practice of this important skill.
