Decoding AND Encoding

While decoding (reading) is important, mastering encoding (spelling) is equally vital!

We should always be practicing decoding and encoding in our phonics lessons, which is why these phonics slides include targeted practice for both decoding (blending/reading) and encoding (spelling/writing) words.

  • For every long vowel team skill, there are decoding AND encoding slides!

Decoding Slides

  • One grapheme/letter appears at a time. Students say the sounds and then blend them together.
  • A slide appears with a picture representing the word, and the word, making this resource self-checking.

★BONUS - Mixed review slides are always included for every skill set!

Encoding Slides

  • A picture representing a word with the target skill appears.
  • Students are prompted to consider how many sounds are in the word.
  • Sound boxes appear (orthographic mapping).
  • One grapheme/letter is added at a time.
  • A slide appears with the picture and the word, and the word, making this resource self-checking.

Note: I highly recommend that students use personal whiteboards (or a blank page inside a page protector) to write/spell the words along with the interactive phonics slides. This allows students to be fully engaged while keeping the activity paperless!

★BONUS - Mixed review slides are always included for every skill set!
