What educators are saying

My students loved this activity! It is very high engagement and keeps the students guessing about the dragon's traits while also teaching about the process of meiosis!
This was a super fun way to discuss meiosis and how it relates to traits in organisms. My students loved drawing and coloring the dragon

Description

In this quick-and-easy activity, students move through the basic steps of meiosis, using coloring pencils, in order to visualize possible gametes that a dragon could produce. The activity proceeds as follows:

1. Students answer pre-activity questions about meiosis

2. Students use a chart, and homologous chromosomes to determine the genotype and phenotype of the parent dragon.

3. Students draw what the parent looks like

4. Students use colored pencils to draw, and track the movement of homologous chromosomes through the stages of meiosis 1 and 2.

5. Students answer post-lab questions

Materials Needed: This packet, and coloring utensils.

Prior Knowledge: This activity assumes that students know basics about genes, chromosomes, and cells.

"The Dragon Project!" is an epic, multi-unit project unlike any you've seen before. It is my student's favorite activity of the year. This three-four week project involves students finding a genome inside an egg, decoding the DNA, identifying the traits of the dragon, building a unique dragon, competing against a population of dragons, analyzing the results, selecting a mate, producing sperm and eggs, and making offspring. It teaches students about DNA, karyotyping, protein synthesis, meiosis, fertilization, data analysis, and the foundation of natural selection and genetics.

"Food Chain Model Game" is a fun, inquiry-based activity in which students write rules to a game that models food-chains. It is NGSS Aligned.

"Clean Up Your School!" is an environmental activity that requires student to learn about the Tragedy of the Commons, then identify examples in your school.

Finally, they propose solutions to make your school and community a better place. It is NGSS Aligned.
