What educators are saying

This resource was an awesome purchase that gave my students the tools to read more deeply into textual information before forming their own conclusions.
I used this as an introduction activity and a substitute. Students worked in small groups for the investigation and concluded on their own. This is an author they have read before so using primary sources was a good way to recap the theories.

Description

Explore Edgar Allan Poe's greatest mystery: his own death! Your students will explore primary sources, non-fiction text, and leading theories about Poe's early death with this engaging crime scene investigation activity that encourages original thinking!

A visually engaging case file is provided with comprehensive background readings on Edgar Allan Poe's life and literary accomplishments, and the events and circumstances leading up to his death. Leading theories about Poe's death are provided. Student detectives will encounter non-fiction background information, primary source excerpts, and much more while taking detective notes on what they learn. They will then answer the reading comprehension response questions, complete a timeline activity, and draw and support their own hypothesis about the mystery of Poe's tragic death! This activity also serves as an author study that explores Poe's life, major works, and common literary themes. Two bonus writing extension activities included as well!

This investigation activity can be used as a printable packet activity, or as an engaging stations classroom activity with groups! Teacher and student notes are provided, along with an answer key for the background reading comprehension activity.

This activity is provided in both ready-to-print color and black and white versions.

This resource makes learning about Edgar Allan Poe highly engaging and is a great supplement, introduction, or reinforcement activity to any lesson! Students will leave the lesson with an understanding Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most influential American authors of all time.
