Elementary Music Summer Olympics - Tokyo

This five day unit (with bonus day!) focuses on using the Summer Olympics as a learning tool for music education, while incorporating traditional summer Olympic sports such as swimming, gymnastics, fencing, synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis and even golf! It can be used for elementary school students from kindergarten to sixth grade (although my high school students begged to do some of these too and enjoy them!), and offers students the chance to both prove their knowledge and think like Olympians! Golfing music trivia? Rhythm stick fencing? Swimming medley relays? It's a new music Olympics every day!

Activities include:

Day 1: intro to the location and its torch, parachute opportunity to move to John Williams' "Olympic Fanfare", then a simplified Olympic theme for boomwhackers/xylos (and color coded!), intro to Tokyo 2020 mascots and all of the sports that make up the summer olympics!

Day 2: Olympic theme song and dance, rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming and swimming relays (based on grade, but could be done with more than one group!)

Day 3: Tennis & Fencing - feeling the beat and moving with it

Day 4: Taiko drumming and stick based sports - golf trivia challenge

Day 5: Tai Chi & Table Tennis
