What educators are saying

I LOVE this resource! I use it each year without fail. The biggest thing I am thankful for is the ability to use it easily in the classroom.

Description

This research project involves proposing the best and worst energy source that can be chosen for a new power plant in an imaginary city. Students are given information on the city, such as geographical and climate data. This project suggests students choose from the following energy sources: biomass (municipal solid waste), biomass (wood residue/waste), coal, geothermal, hydroelectric, natural gas, nuclear, oil, solar, or wind. Here is the introduction to the scenario -

"The imaginary city of Inlet Bay, Florida, is in dire need of a new power plant. Inlet Bay’s city council members have decided to take input from the city’s residents regarding the energy source the power plant will rely on. As a concerned citizen, you want to make sure your voice is heard. In order to do so, you are going to give a brief presentation that argues in favor of one energy source and against another source."

Thanks to the open nature of Google Docs, this document can be freely edited, and downloaded as either a Word document or PDF. Just remember to save a copy to your Drive before editing. There is no rubric included with purchase.

Appropriate for high school environmental, general, or life science, or advanced general middle school science, as well as for college-level introductory ecology or sustainability courses. This project would be a good review activity for the essential knowledge covered in Unit 6: Energy Resources and Consumption of the AP Environmental Science (APES) curriculum.
