Description

This student packet with corresponding PowerPoint presentation allows your students to explore ethics and journalism in an engaging 1-2 day lesson on ALTERED PHOTOGRAPHS. Through this engaging lesson/activity, students view three sets of CONTROVERSIAL photographs that were ALTERED or photoshopped by professional journalists, analyzing and arguing whether or not they should have been published in terms of ethics. This activity is very thought-provoking and engaging, sparking lots of debate and discussion. Two journal reflection prompts are also included for the especially controversial altering of OJ Simpson's mugshot for two magazine covers.

Students view each photograph set, read a short paragraph or two about the context surrounding the altering that was done, and finally analyze each set for the ethical questions raised. Students decide whether or not they would have altered and/or published each photo themselves as a photographer or editor for a major newspaper, arguing for their position. This activity opens up excellent meaningful discussion about moral issues and common ethical dilemmas faced by journalists. It is a great standalone activity for a high school lesson on ethics or it can easily be incorporated into a journalism unit or life skills unit. Moreover, this is an excellent activity for your newspaper staff if you are a newspaper advisor. The photos are engaging and the critical thinking questions spark intellectual classroom discussion and debate!
