OVERVIEW:

Over the course of these 4 expository writing mini-units, students will master the techniques required to complete well-structured informational writing. Using the P.E.E.L method for organizing paragraphs, students will learn to write fluent, multi-paragraph compositions. The units are broken down into the following types of essays: explanatory; cause/effect; process; and compare/contrast. Each unit guides students through the process of idea generation, planning, drafting, and editing. Moreover, lesson plans guide the teacher through the process of teaching key elements such as writing strong introductions, using transition words and phrases for fluency, and forming solid, mature thesis statements.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

  • Plan and structure their writing in a way which is highly organized, and logical.
  • Write clear, concise, and defined thesis statements.
  • Craft strong body paragraphs with highly focused topic sentences.
  • Use transition words and phrases to make writing fluent and articulate.
  • Craft introductions and conclusions which grab the attention of the reader, and clearly open & close the essay.

CONTENTS:

  • Complete Unit Plan and Suggested Pacing Schedule.
  • 4 individual mini-units, with step-by-step lesson plans (each one guides the teacher in the most effective way to teach the concepts of the lesson, and provides helpful tips and hints for effective practice). A variety of attractive expository writing worksheets and hand-outs which accompany the lesson plans.

Mini-Units INCLUDED:

Unit 1: The Explanatory Essay

An important feature of expository writing is style & structure: articulating & explaining thoughts and ideas in an effective, mature manner. Therefore, these lessons will help students express their thoughts and explain them in fluent, well-structured paragraphs.

Unit 2: The Cause / Effect Essay

By the end of this unit, students will have a firm understanding of what is required for a well-structured, detailed cause and effect essay. In particular, students will be able to write precise, fluent thesis statement, and topic sentences.

Unit 3: The “How To” / Process Essay

These lessons will explore the process essay – often referred to as the “how to” essay. Students will be guided through the process of sequentially planning and writing this important and commonly used essay format.

Unit 4: The Compare & Contrast Essay

The comparative essay is an important form for students to know: successful understanding of it will help develop critical thinking, literary analysis, and skills of synthesis. By the end of this mini unit students will know what is required to plan, structure, write, and edit a compare/contrast essay.
