Description

My students have had trouble with opinion writing for years, so I finally created the cure with this unit! Before this, I had made so many assumptions about their understanding of the audience and writing a counterargument, not to mention the horrifying time of teaching them to write effective opening and closing paragraphs! I realized I had been assigning them writing, not really teaching it.

If your students struggle with writing an OPINION ESSAY, as mine did, then this packet is for you! It leads students through the process of writing an opinion paragraph from the planning stages to peer editing and then their final piece. It is a perfect starting point for students to write a full opinion essay.

This unit breaks down opinion writing into easy steps and provides support at each step. It makes it much easier for students to understand what to do and how to do it, so they actually will write! (And you will actually want to read it!) The unit is based on a five-paragraph essay structure, but it could easily be expanded to include more body paragraphs.
