Foley Art- a lab for Sound Waves!

What educators are saying
Description
This is a hands-on, very engaging lab that allows students to become experts on sound effects! This lesson took me about 2-3 class periods, but you can easily adjust the length depending on your needs.
I begin by showing students YouTube videos of what a Foley artist does and how they work with sound. Then, students complete the first few slides of the presentation which is a webquest and use the provided links to answer several questions related to Foley Art.

Next, I show students options of sounds they may want to recreate or they may choose their own. I explain the rubric (which you can easily adjust) and then give them time to brainstorm with their peers.
When students are ready to present their projects, I have them share their video link to Schoology, Google classroom, etc. and I play their clip muted while they create the sound. The rest of the class acts as a judge and decides which group created the most realistic sound.
Students absolutely loved this project and it kept them engaged while still encompassing the components of sound waves. I had students use any extra class time to search for videoclips, "practice" making their sound effects or just brainstorming materials they can use to make their sounds. I hope your students enjoy this lab as much as mine did!
